Union Learning Representatives ULRs are crucial in any project, as they are the ones that support and guide the learners and are seen as the people that can be confided in, especially if there are Skills for Life needs or Barriers to Learning. Do you have what it takes to be a ULR? Are you interested in gaining great skills to support and help work colleagues in learning? Why not take the first step and agree to be trained as a Union Learning Rep at your workplace. Jenny or Steve can help and advise you on workplace learning. Training is available to become a ULR through the GMB. A 5 day training programme is available at the TUC Training Centre at St Andrews House in Norwich. Please contact GMB Project Co-ordinator, Steve Walker to enroll. Directions to the TUC Training Centre Your rights as a ULR In the past ULRs have had difficulty in obtaining time off from employers to carry out their duties and to train for them. That is why the TUC and its unions persuaded the government to introduce statutory recognition that gives ULRs similar rights to union representatives as a whole. ULR Rights There are currently around over 7,000 union learning reps active across the UK, and such is the level of interest that the TUC believes it is well on-course to achieve its target of 22,000 trained learning reps by the end of the decade. The public/private split of union learning reps is fairly evenly matched, with 52 per cent in the public and 47 per cent of reps in the private sectors. Over half the reps work in large organisations and businesses (52 per cent), with a considerable number employed in firms with less than 250 employees. Companies who reach formal learning agreements with unions in their workplaces are usually those employers most likely to be taking employee learning seriously, says the TUC. Over half the learning reps in the survey (51 per cent) reported such an agreement where they work. Union Learning There are many employers and union members that have little or no knowledge of what a Union Learning Project represents, so this site is designed to promote Lifelong Learning and give an insight into the activities of the project. The aim of any learning project is to improve peoples lives and to give opportunities to all, especially those that may not have achieved their full potential. All of the courses within the project will have had in some way an impact on social and employment skills. Learning comes in different shapes and sizes. Computer, language, plumbing, reflexology, English and maths, self-defence courses and lots more. View the current courses
