Jeyes workers clean up on learning

Jeyes of Thetford, a company that manufactures bleaches, and other house hold cleaning products is the latest company to get involved in the GMB Union (General Municipal Boilermakers) Workplace Learning and Skills Project. This project covers all of Norfolk and Suffolk and is funded by the LSC (Learning Skills Council).

To launch the Project on site at the Brunel way site, Keystones Multi-Mobile IT bus was hired. 12 union members and employees attended a two-hour session on an Introduction to Computing course after their shift had finished.

For many of the attendees it was the first form of learning they had experienced for many years and for some since leaving school.

Steve Walker, Project Co-ordinator for the GMB has said, “it is great to see people not used to learning get back on the learning ladder and come away with more confidence and are eager to do more”.

All who attended said, “it was good fun and really useful.”

Others said, “it was nothing like they imagined as this was friendly and relaxed and great the GMB Union comes to the factory to do the course and its Free.”

Many of the new learners have said they would like to go on and learn more about computers and other forms of learning and others have said they may want to get a qualification in the future.

Bobby McGregor, Operations Manager at Jeyes, said, “Jeyes is fully supportive of this initiative by the GMB and it is hoped it will benefit both the company and the employees in gaining new skills”.

The Project

Where we are?

3) Delivered 2 taster sessions on ITC

     (20 learning outcomes)

4) Delivered 2 follow on IT courses with embedded literacy

    (14 learning outcomes)

5) Awareness learning day with Football Basics

(74 attended, 20 indicated future learning interest)

What’s next?

A better Partnership approach from the employer and the GMB to engage a higher percentage of employees in improving their skills that will also improve Productivity and efficiency.

How can this be done?

Many employees have not engaged in learning due to lack of confidence and motivation and feel they don’t have time.

From the talks I have had from the ULR’s and feedback from Jeyes employees many indicated they would be more willing to enrol on courses if some of the learning was within work time.

We have found that if the employer were to agree release time for employees a greater take up could be achieved. In order to balance the commitment of both parties the learner would also have to agree to an equal amount of time for learning.

The general principal is that learning could be organised at the beginning of a shift, so the learner would start an hour early or it could be at the end of a shift, with the learner finishing one hour later.

Cost to the Employer

There would be no cost for the delivery of the courses, as the Learning Provider will cover these costs through government funding.

There will be the cost of releasing employees from their work areas, but these costs should be regained with the improvements of productivity and efficiency.  In an average company that employs 100 people, £86,000 is lost to errors or wastage through poor Maths, English or reading skills.

Courses can be designed to meet the needs of the organisation and the individual. To add value and increase interest, computer skills can be delivered within the course with numeracy and literacy embedded.

Support and Resources from the GMB

Funds have been made available to encourage and support Learning at work in a number of ways.

1) Book Box, a box of £500 of course materials for learning. Language books, Computer course books, DIY and Hobbies and much more.

2) A Computer and Printer to support those wishing to learn at work.

GMB Members gain new FLT Qualification

Mark Tilson and Steve Bray recently underwent a three day FLT Course in Kings Lynn. Already experienced drivers for several years, but both wanted a transferable RTITB Cert that is well recognised across all workplaces. The GMB found some funding and off the two went and did the course.

GMB Internet Bite Size At Jeyes

In April the Multi-Mobile Learning Bus visited Jeyes of Thetford for the second time. There was a good take up on the course with 12 people attending a Bite Size Internet Session.

The course covered how the Internet works and the functions of the tool bars. Once the learners got to grips with the basic’s they were given some task’s to do, these included the  use of search engines and how to use short cuts to find information on the web.

The two hour course proved to be really good fun and very useful as some of the learners had a trial go at booking a holiday in Spain using their new skills.

All of the learners have said they would like to do progression courses preferably at the workplace very soon.
