Norfolk Project

"A strong business case and good PR"

NCS (Norfolk County Services), the five unions, GMB, UNISON, UCATT, AMICUS, TGWU and TULL (Trade Union Learning Link) have been involved in a project entitled 'Learning Lift-Off'. Now in its fourth year, the project has secured European funding and is managed by the GMB. It is moving its focus to Skills for Life and NVQs.

Tricia Fuller, HR Director for NCS, says, "There is a strong business case for the Learning Lift-Off project. NCS has shown:

  • A reduction in staff turnover by 12%.

  • A reduction in staff sickness absence.

  • Recruitment advertising costs fell by £5000

  • The annual attitude survey saw a 20% rise in satisfaction. Staff felt supported with learning and development.

  • 14% increase in response rate to recruitment adverts which mentioned the learning project.

  • 13% increase in staff requesting personal development interviews. 70% of those who came forward had been involved in the Lift-Off project.

  • Reduction in requests by staff for management assistance with pay forms, time sheets etc.

Tricia continued, "In the first two years of running Learning Lift-Off, over 900 members of staff and their families have taken up some form of learning opportunity."
