Crown Brush-Feet for Success in Learning

Crown Artist Brush - Case Study

Sue Parnell - A Star

Recently the GMB organised a whole day of learning and training activities at the Kirkley Centre Lowestoft. Union members and their guests could try Free 90-minute taster sessions in a choice of subjects.  Reflexology proved to be very popular. The attendees were given instructions of this ancient science of health and how it works and then they had to practice the techniques on each other.

Digital photography was also on offer and the training session consisted of using a camera and then how to enhance the photographs and insert into a fun project of a calendar design. Desktop Publishing, Introduction to Computers and the Internet were also on offer, as was a session on the National Test for Numeracy and Literacy Levels 1&2.

All of the taster sessions were well received with a total of 40 bookings being delivered on the day. Some people signed up for a few courses and others stayed all-day and learnt that learning can be fun and addictive.

GMB Union Project Co-ordinator, Steve Walker who organised the day said, “most of the people who attended had not done any form learning for many years and some since leaving school”.

The new learners have said, “this form of learning was great fun and really useful and would like to do more courses and maybe a qualification in the future”. John Leggett Kirkley Centre Manager said, “it is great to see people of all ages and abilities getting back to learning, we have follow on courses that are available at the Kirkley Centre or at Lowestoft College and it is hoped many of these new learners now feel more confident about learning and will continue with it”.

Learning in demand at Crown Brush

The Book Box Library has proved to be very popular with many of the employees at Crown.

Most dinner times Mel or Sue are at hand to check the books in and out and reading is now common at work.

The National Test has had many new comers from Crown taking advantage of the Free Qualification.

Pictured below are a few on their course which the company agreed to then doing in work time.

The notice Board is the place to find out what’s going on and there is always plenty to sign up for.

Mel and Sue are well organised and design their own posters to attract new learners.
